Plant these herbs in window planter boxes, your patio and lawn. They really gel with flowering plants, and can be used in your kitchen too. Here are some common herb plants that will give you respite from insects and fleas –

Lemongrass – If you had a chance of having lemongrass tea then you already know about the good old lemongrass herb plant. It is a tall perennial grass that comes in many varieties. Among its various names, it is also famous as fever grass. It is often used in tea for the aroma of lemon. It has the subtle taste of citrus fruit that gives a delicious tinge to tea. It is an insect repellant and is widely used in spray and candles. You can crush the leaves and use it as a spray to sprinkle over the lawn.

Basil – The holy basil is also known as “Tulsi” in India. It comes in green and purple varieties. Crushing the leaves of basil produces oil and fragrance that mosquitoes hate. You can also rub the juice of basil leaves on insect bites. Similar to lemongrass it is also used in tea to enhance the flavor.

Marigold – Marigolds come in beautiful yellow and maroon flowers. The plant actually is not an herb but is a favourite of gardeners. They keep the mosquitoes and other bugs away from flowers and vegetables in the kitchen garden. Marigold plants repel garden pests and the flowers add flavor to salads. The flowers are edible and can be a gorgeous addition to dishes at lunch time.
