The greenery of herbs or the aromas – the fragrance that does not limit to the garden but wafts inside the house like no air freshener did.

People like a colorful garden but have they considered the fragrance? I remember when I was a small kid, the garden that excited me had to be about the colors. Lovely lavenders, pink and orange roses, white lilies and jasmine, yellow marigolds and the purple orchids are a sight to behold. Bright red chrysanthemums and hibiscus, the little periwinkles and the orange ixoras, they are all so colorful. Who can resist their charm? Herb garden has its own charm too.

What makes an herb garden lively and compelling?
Of course – it is the aromas.

A garden that emanates fragrances can be very relaxing. Imagine coming to your herb garden after a stress filled day, walking through the pathway amidst the lemongrass that gave off zesty lemon fragrance could be so soothing.

The herbs like flowers radiate energy and vibrancy too.
How often did you turn back to wonder where that bewitching fragrance came from? No matter, how much the lovely colours attract you, it is the delicate scent that fills your nostrils with perfume that come straight from heaven.

Colours could never do the dance and rhythm of a garden without the aromas. It is the fragrance that attracts the bees and butterflies. It is the smell that repels the mosquitoes from herbs that produce volatile oils and compounds. The herbs are natural repellant to many harmful insects. These plants produce their own natural pesticides to drive away insidious parasites.

In addition these aromatic herbs have medicinal properties. Here are some awesome herbs that smell great –

Lemon balm – This lemony herb is shade-tolerant, and an aromatic herb that leaves a mild lemon scent. It is often used in tea preparations and to flavor ice-cream and puddings. Originated from Europe and Mediterranean region, the lemongrass is a must for the herb garden.

Thyme – This graceful herb requires a well-drained soil. It favours a lot of sunshine and loves a neutral to alkaline pH soil quality. Its cultivars contain lemon and lavender zest. The 2 varieties of this herb are creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) and woolly thyme (Thyme pseudolanuginosus). You can plant them in the pathway between pavement stones. As you lightly walk over them, the plants release a mild fragrance from the pressure exerted by your feet.

Lavenders are the preferred aromatic herbs that do well in hot summer and moderate water and very less requirement of fertilizer.

Rosemary is another fragrant herb that finds its way to culinary cuisine, this herb is prevalent in Mediterranean region and Italian cooking.
